Enfoque Mensual/Monthly Highlight: Blanca Moreno
¡ Gran trabajo Blanca!
Two years ago Blanca weighed 198 lbs. and decided to start exercising on her own. In one year she lost about ten pounds doing exercise videos at home and riding her bike. Then a friend told her about Centro Hispano’s free Zumba classes. Blanca started attending and has now been faithfully participating for a little over a year. Although Blanca is always on the go she loves to make time for Zumba in the morning because of the way that it makes her feel. “Exercise makes you more conscientious of what you eat, making sure to drink more water, and cooking healthy foods at home,” says Blanca. As of March 2010 Blanca weighs 173 lbs. and has lost a total of 14 lbs! She enjoys feeling healthy and participating in Centro Hispano’s events when she can. Her family has attended Centro Hispano’s health fairs, Summer Festival for kids, and many more. Blanca has also invited many friends and family to participate in Centro Hispano’s health program. Great job Blanca!

Diet vs. Lifestyle
Diet is a four letter word to dietitians like me. Why do I hate ‘diets’ so much? Because they don’t work! Or you lose weight quickly but it comes back on just as quick. Losing weight is not about an amazing diet plan, it’s about making changes that you can maintain and in return keep weight off.
Diets typically deprive you of certain foods and what happens when you know you can’t have something? You think about it and the more you think about it the more you want it and the less committed you become to your ‘diet’. Once you have that forbidden food, the guilt sets in. You feel like you failed. Then after some time you try a diet again hoping to lose the five extra pounds you put on after you last diet attempt. A diet sets you up for failure.
More successful weight loss comes from a change in your lifestyle. A lifestyle change means that there are small changes you make and that you can keep doing forever. You can’t live off eating only fruit but choosing to eat more fruit in your diet is something you can keep doing.
I leave you with my rule of two weeks. It seems that any change you start to make takes about two weeks for it to become enough of a habit that you will keep going. Research shows that it takes at least three weeks for a change to stick and three months for it to become a full habit. So don’t get discouraged if choosing more fruits and vegetables or other small changes are not easy at first. Stick with it! Try a change for at least two weeks!

Intro and Exercise by Brittny Bird
Hello everyone! I am excited to blogging for you about eating healthy and losing weight. I love food! And that is one of the biggest reasons that I became a dietitian. I am a firm believer that all food can and should be enjoyed. The key is moderation. Churro every once in a while isn’t a bad thing; a churro everyday……not your best choice.

Enfoque Mensual: Blanca Zavala

Monthly Spotlight: Blanca Zavala
Blanca Zavala started attending Centro Hispano’s free Zumba classes in September 2010. At first she came to Zumba three times a week in the morning but recently decided to add two evening classes for a total of Zumba five times a week. Before trying Zumba Blanca never enjoyed exercising. Now she is addicted! She loves the energy that comes from everyone screaming and dancing. “No matter the size or age, we’re all there to have a good time and forget about our worries,” says Blanca. She also adds, “When I finish a Zumba class I have so much energy but when I go without Zumba I feel tired. Zumba is a great start for my day.” With Zumba Blanca not only felt better but started noticing a difference in her body. She has gone from a size 16 to a size 10 in pants!
Blanca admits that she has struggled with her weight in the past. Although she tried different diets and would loose weight fast as soon as she stopped the diet she would gain the weight right back. This time, rather than follow a strict diet she has become more conscientious of what she eats and has made small changes, “less tortillas, less bread, and using olive oil instead of regular oil” Blanca explains are some of the small adjustments she has made. Blanca has also started attending Centro Hispano’s Cocina Saludable Classes. She enjoys learning how to modify recipes to make them healthier. Blanca’s advice, “Don’t give up. If one day you stop coming, start again! Take it one day at a time. It’s worth it in the long run.” Keep it up Blanca!
